    Efecto de factores ambientales en la actividad de la abeja y en el rendimiento de semilla de cebolla (Allium cepa L.)

    Los polinizadores son necesarios para producir semillas de cebolla. Esta especie es uno de los principales cultivos hortícolas. Dos tipos de variedades de cebolla se cultivan principalmente en todo el mundo: híbridos y cultivares de polinización abierta (PA). Aunque los híbridos ofrecen ventajas a los cultivadores de bulbos, los rendimientos de semillas de los híbridos son más bajos que los cultivares PA y eso es un problema importante. Se determinó la influencia de los factores ambientales (temperatura, radiación, precipitación, humedad relativa (HR) y velocidad del viento), así como la atracción de abejas y la producción de semillas en tres localidades, de principal zona productora de semillas de cebolla en Argentina. Se utilizaron nueve líneas androestériles (LAE) y una PA. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron una marcada variabilidad en la atracción de abejas y la producción de semillas entre la variedad PA y las LAE y dentro de las LAE. Además, los factores ambientales, como la temperatura mínima o HR, fueron determinantes para modificar el comportamiento de alimentación de las abejas, donde valores inferiores a 9°C y 22%, respectivamente, hicieron que las abejas detuvieran su actividad.Pollinators are required to produce onion seeds.     Onion Hybrid Seed Production: Relation with Nectar Composition and Flower Traits

    Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the main vegetable crops. Pollinators are required for onion seed production, being honeybees the most used. Around the world, two types of onion varieties are grown: open pollinated (OP) and hybrids. Hybrids offer numerous advantages to growers, but usually have lower seed yields than OP cultivars, which in many cases compromise the success of new hybrids. As pollination is critical for seed set, understanding the role of floral rewards and attractants to pollinator species is the key to improve crop seed yield. In this study, the correlation of nectar-analyzed compounds, floral traits, and seed yield under open field conditions in two experimental sites was determined. Nectar composition was described through the analysis of sugars, phenol, and alkaloid compounds. Length and width of the style and tepals of the flowers were measured to describe floral traits. Floral and nectar traits showed differences among the studied lines. For nectar traits, we found a significant influence of the environment where plants were cultivated. Nonetheless, flower traits were not influenced by the experimental sites. The OP and the male-sterile lines (MSLs) showed differences in nectar chemical composition and floral traits. In addition, there were differences between and within MSLs, some of which were correlated with seed yield, bringing the opportunity to select the most productive MSL, using simple determinations of morphological characters like the length of the style or tepals size.EEA La ConsultaFil: Soto Vargas, Verónica Carolina.     Improving Adventitious Shoot Regeneration and Transient Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation of Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) Hypocotyl Sections

    The improvement of previously described protocols for the regeneration of shoots from ‘Canino’ mature seed hypocotyl slices has been accomplished. The effects of different factors such as the part of the hypocotyl used, vacuum-infiltration, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid pulse, vacuum-infiltration and sonication on regeneration and transient transformation were analyzed. When the three slices obtained from the hypocotyls were evaluated separately on regeneration medium, the highest percentages of regenerating explants were achieved in the part close to the epicotyl and in the central part. On the other hand, sonication of the explants for 30 s followed by vacuum-infiltration during Agrobacterium infection for 20 min allowed for an increase in the transformation events. The application of these modifications to the procedure increased the regeneration efficiencies, and transient transformation events and may reduce the frequency of failed experiments. An efficient regeneration/transformation protocol could facilitate its use as a biotechnological technique for apricot breeding

    La actividad agraria en el Levante español está experimentando cambios importantes en los últimos tiempos. Existe una tendencia clara al monocultivo y a la sustitución de cultivos tradicionales en el territorio por otros que son mucho más productivos y que permiten obtener mejores resultados económicos. Estos factores tienen dos consecuencias fundamentales, por una parte, el abandono de la actividad agraria, con la consiguiente pérdida de ruralidad y, por otra parte, un efecto negativo en el mantenimiento de la biodiversidad, al desaparecer cultivares tradicionales, ahora en desuso. En este marco, el trabajo analiza la situación de los productores de un cultivo tradicional en Levante, el tomate. Para conocer la situación actual y la previsión futura se han realizado 40 entrevistas en profundidad a productores de tomate. El análisis de la información obtenida permitirá proponer actuaciones adecuadas para el mantenimiento de las variedades tradicionales.Agricultural activity in Southeast of Spain is changing emphatically in the last times.     Traditional Varieties for Local Markets: A Sustainable Proposal for Agricultural SMEs

    Agricultural activity has changed significantly in recent years. There is a clear trend towards monoculture and the replacement of traditional crops for others which are more productive and achieve better economic results. These factors have two fundamental consequences: on the one hand, the abandonment of agricultural activity, with the subsequent loss of rurality; on the other hand, a negative effect on the maintenance of biodiversity, because traditional varieties disappear. In this context, this paper analyses the situation of consumers and farmers of a traditional crop in the southeast of Spain: the tomato. In order to understand the current situation and the forecasted future, a choice experiment was conducted on 217 tomato consumers. Furthermore, 40 tomato farmers of this area underwent an in-depth interview. On the one hand, analysis of the consumer study established a potential segment of the population that prefers traditional varieties due to their high organoleptic properties. Meanwhile, the farmer study revealed a segment of this population that is willing to produce these types of crops. Therefore, the possibility that a certain sector of producers cultivates traditional varieties is suggested, and for these varieties to be aimed at a market niche that values them positively, making the activity of Small and Medium Enterprises (agricultural SMEs) profitable. This would improve the sustainability of the rural territory and would strengthen the preservation of genetic heritage

    Is the Nectar Sugar Content the Key to Improving Onion and Bunching Onion Seed Yield?

    Bunching onion as well as onion show great variability in seed yield among cultivars. Understanding the role of floral rewards and attractants to pollinator species is crucial to improving crop seed yield. Nectar sugar concentration is one of the most important factors affecting bee–flower interaction. The objective of this work was to determine the differences in nectar sugar composition between onion and bunching onion lines grown in the same location during two consecutive cultivation cycles and in two different productive areas under open field conditions, and the relationship of these sugars with seed yield. The results obtained showed that, regardless of the season and the location, bunching onion produced higher seed yields than onion, and the sugar content was always higher than in onion. Fructose represented on average 56% of the total sugars, glucose 34% and, sucrose 9% of the total amount of sugars in nectar. There were differences between the two locations studied. Fructose content had a significant correlation with seed yield. The amount of sugars in bunching onion could be the reason why this species does not have pollination problems in contrast to onion plants. In addition, the differences found in seed yield between locations could provide options for seed companies to make production decisions

    IntroductionTrans-grafting could be a strategy to transfer virus resistance from a transgenic rootstock to a wild type scion. However contradictory results have been obtained in herbaceous and woody plants. This work was intended to determine if the resistance to sharka could be transferred from transgenic plum rootstocks to wild-type apricot scions grafted onto them.MethodsTo this end, we conducted grafting experiments of wild- type apricots onto plum plants transformed with a construction codifying a hairpin RNA designed to silence the PPV virus and studied if the resistance was transmitted from the rootstock to the scion.ResultsOur data support that the RNA-silencing-based PPV resistance can be transmitted from PPV-resistant plum rootstocks to non-transgenic apricot scions and that its efficiency is augmented after successive growth cycles. PPV resistance conferred by the rootstocks was robust, already occurring within the same growing cycle and maintained in successive evaluation cycles. The RNA silencing mechanism reduces the relative accumulation of the virus progressively eliminating the virus from the wild type scions grafted on the transgenic resistant PPV plants. There was a preferential accumulation of the 24nt siRNAs in the scions grafted onto resistant rootstocks that was not found in the scions grafted on the susceptible rootstock. This matched with a significantly lower relative accumulation of hpRNA in the resistant rootstocks compared with the susceptible or the tolerant ones.DiscussionUsing transgenic rootstocks should mitigate public concerns about transgenes dispersion and eating transgenic food and allow conferring virus resistance to recalcitrant to transformation cultivars or species.</p
